they set out a uh a helpline for all of the students, all of those affected that they can contact and get the help that they need as well, so many of the people there just trying to find the words uh for what has happened, and lauren taylor is still with me, that was so clear, wasn't it lauren, they kept on saying how do we find the right words to describe the indescribable? yes, that's right, it's described by a couple of them as a henous crime, as you mentioned there, christian stocker, the austrian chancellor saying it's a national tragedy. that affects us deeply, people's lives have been taken away, there are no words to express the sadness felt by all of austria, and he expressed and so did the other officials deep consool condolences to all the the families and those who've been affected, but also compassion for those who've been injured and those who suffer suffered unimaginable loss as he put it. he also, as you mentioned, talked about the need to show unity uh, and he said that schools are supposed to be a place that a place of trust, a place that you can learn, this should have been a safe space.
2:46 pm
"this has been violated, he said that violence must never become part of the solution uh, and he talked offered his thanks also to the police and to all the first responders, he's also um restated what we we know that there's going to be a three-day uh period of national morning for the victims and tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock a moment of silence for people to express solidarity. and lauren, did you pick up anything else about the perpetrator? i think the interior minister girhad karner did make it clear that the..." uh perpetrator is 21 years old and a former student at the school and he did not graduate, also saying lots of speculation going around, but they they're investigating so we heard from from the police we heard that they can confirm that this was uh that the the 10th death was that of the shooter and we can confirm they said that it was an individual offender so somebody who acted alone uh and that they said the perpetator took his own life in a bathroom, as you mentioned there the they also have confirmed that he's a 21-year-old austrian from the grats area.

'and he used two guns and the weapons initially they said they were probably owned legally, then they clarified that he did have a firearms license, so he did legally own the firearms that appear to have been used, but was not known to police prior to this, that's right, yeah, and they are the as they said still investigating what can have been the motive behind this this terrible shooting, and it's a huge challenge for the austrian police, they said because they've now got to kind of gather all the information about his background, um, and as you said, they didn't they didn't want people speculating, they've got to investigate'. all of this further, but in the meantime the school is closed for the time being i think as you mentioned that there is now going to be a whole set up where teachers and students can have help from the school psychologist if they want it um and it was interesting to note that most of the speakers here did talk about the fact that there needs to be solidarity, people need to kind of stick together at this point, several people made the point that this isn't a time for making you political gain from from the situation, yes and that there would be no political activity or discussions everything would be.

in austria for the next three days, also along with that minute of silence, we will also have another one before austria's ufo world cup qualifying game versus san marino tonight, the players expected to wear black armbands as well as a sign of their respect, the other one point to make, of course the school is closed, the austrian education minister christoph verika saying he cannot find the words to describe what the country is going through, what the school has been through. he is offering words of support wherever necessary and says the school will remain closed until further notice, but a lot of care, a lot of psychologists are on hand and a lot of support is being offered to students, teachers and parents as well. if we have more details to bring you from austria, we will of course update you straight away and we will have continuing coverage here on bbc news throughout the day around the world and across the uk. this is bbc news.

ukraine is just about holding the front here while the russians have launched. this fresh assault everywhere you look there are uprooted trees, there are bits of building, and the destruction is just in every direction. passangery drones were dropped here, we know this was the military hunter because the rebels don't have that kind of weaponry. well you can hear the tier girls canisters being loved at the protesters. there when the story breaks, bbc news. "welcome back, another developing story that we are following today, the uk has sanctioned two israeli far-right ministers over comments they made on gaza, isama ben gavier and bezalalrich will both face a travel ban and have their assets
2:51 pm
frozen, as part of the measures announced by the uk foreign secretary. we've had lots of responses through to this, including from both of the men, and uh, is a..." uh, mr. smotric has said that britain has already tried once to prevent us from settling the cradle of our homeland, and we will not allow it to do so again. we are determined with god's help to continue building. i've also been speaking to our diplomatic correspondent james landell. the british have imposed sanctions on various israels, particularly settlers in the west bank and elsewhere. uh, but this is a move that has taken a long time gestation. i mean, the conservatives were thinking of doing this, david cameron has been very open about the... fact that he considered doing this when he was foreign secretary and only didn't do it because of concerns about causing tensions here in the uk in the run up to last year's elections um the government here has been under a lot of pressure to do this and since uh last month when david lamam the foreign secretary stood up in the house of commons and was
2:52 pm
very very critical of these two ministers both of them far right nationalists both of whom are key parts of the coalition that forms israel's government at the moment uh mr uh uh lammy describing them as monstrous and extremists for what they'd said specifically about two things really, one is about the restriction of aid from gaza and also the calls for the relocation of palestinians outside of gaza, so yes it is a big move um and already it's not officially confirmed by the british government as yet, the foreign office is still saying they're not reporting on leaks because originally this was first reported by the times newspaper, but subsequent to that uh israeli ministers have confirmed it, for example the foreign minister. gideon sar has said this was an outrageous decision that elected representatives are subjected these measures. he's discussed it with benjamin netanyahu, the pr prime minister, they're going to hold a special government meeting next week to decide on what the response is to what he calls this unacceptable decision. both of the ministers who've been uh sanctioned have
2:53 pm
also commented and criticized it in in biblical terms. britain is not alone though in doing this, other commonwealth countries have already, there is an expectation that there will be others uh international. partners who will also take place when these these sanctions are best imposed uh as a collective act rather than individual sort of bit parts, i mean the restrictions are technical that you can't travel to the uk, you can't have any kind of financial links with the the uk, it's never automatically clear how much financial engagement these two ministers have with the uk, but what it means is you know family, relations, others they can't travel to the uk, there's if there's any kind of financial link, any kind of uh linkage, so it can't um, but the impact is political, it's symbolic, yeah, what does it tell us then about the uk government's changing position, perhaps on the war in gaza? uh, look, this is a continuation of a ramping up of frustration and increased pressure on the israelis, if you think about it, in recent months, you've had a
2:54 pm
joint statement from kier starmer, president macron, the canadian saying, look, we now think there is a serious risk that israel's actions in gaza are breaking international law, a few weeks. ago you had the uk suspending trade talks with israel, this is the latest stage. the question is, where does that stop? there's a conference in new york next week, organized by the french and the saudis, where the issue of recognizing the state of palestine will be discussed, whether they move that, get over that step, i don't know, but this is part of, i think increasing international frustration with what's happening in gaza. what countries have signaled that they will be recognizing a palestinian state? the spaniards have come out and said they some european countries have i mean there are, i think there are about 140 or so countries around the world who've already done this, but the key question is, what do the big players, the g7 and others start doing if they start doing that, and the debate has always been, um, you should only recognize state of palestine as
2:55 pm
part of a process to move as peace settlement on or to get it an extra bit of leverage, it shouldn't just be a straightforward sort of an act of protest or anger against the israeli government and its decisions. 'and that's the debate that's been calculated now isn't you it's a big card to play you don't want to waste it uh the argument that the those who say we go now is now is the time because of the sheer reality of what's happening'. gaza and also the political pressure, how intense would you say it is on the uk government at the moment in terms of public opinion on what they're watching and seeing every day? i think the sense is that it's rising, i think certainly that in terms of as reflected the the popular will as reflected through mps, if you hear those debates in parliament now, whenever this comes up is quite sort of regular, it is cross-party, the scale of the concern about what's happening, the opposition to the israeli government's policy uh seems to be seems to be growing, and there are people... in parliament who have been long-standing supporters of the state of israel who are finding increasingly hard to justify
2:56 pm
what is what the the actions that have been taken by israeli forces in gaza. james landell there, if you have been with me for the past few hours, it has been harrowing as we've brought you news from austria of these 10 people dead in this austrian school shooting, one of them, the perpetrator. thank you for being with us on bbc news. we'll continue to keep you up to date and i'll leave you with the words of chancellor stocker. who has said, in these difficult hours, being human is our strongest comment. stay with us, matthew is henry. hello there, let's take a brief look now the world weather forecast for the next day or so. we'll begin in north america, where there's an area of low pressure tracking eastwards across canada, bringing some heavy outbreaks of rain towards the south and the east, and on the trailing front, stretching down through parts of... florida, louisiana, into texas, oklahoma, still the risk of some severe thunderstorms, particularly for parts of texas

way up to tanzania and kenya with that southwesterly wind. meanwhile, the area of low pressure pulls away from south africa, so turning settled here, but remaining cold for the time of year. across the middle east, it is fairly quiet, some showers just tracking further eastwards, across the caucasus as we head through wednesday and thursday. the heat continues across the northwest of india, heat wave warnings in place also for pakistan as well.
