happens. bell to bell global live stream cnbc plus real time data and full episodes of cnbc's business day lineup. on demand, cnbc plus access any market anytime, anywhere. start streaming at cnbc.com plus. >> well, time to sit down with london mayor sadiq khan to discuss where the u.k. fits within the global landscape, from britain to universities to london's role as a financial hub. and she joins us now. tanya, this is a fascinating conversation in the view that there's been a lot of pushback around endowment and student visas in the united states. so it would seem like a perfect moment for education here. and of course, the tech financial services side of the uk seems to be improving with better communication with the europeans now. >> that's absolutely right, karen. and i think our mayor, the mayor of london, sadiq khan,
4:49 am
is grabbing those opportunities. so i asked him if he thought he could attract more university students coming to london and the uk because of what's happening in the us. this is what he had to say. >> let me be frank. i think there's an opportunity here for our universities, for london and for our economy, because i know the difference that pipeline of students can make, not just not just in terms of the economy, but also culturally and socially as well. and there has been an attack on freedom of speech. that's been an attack on higher education. there has been an attack on some of the values that both america and the us, the brits have held for decades. i mean, i recently celebrated ve day. this is just one example of how america, the uk and others came together for the common good. and i think the reality is some people are being deterred from going to america to study, to work, to visit, come to london. >> do you feel democracy is
4:50 am
under threat under his administration? >> no, it's not for me to say in terms of, you know, what's happening in terms of the feeling that americans feel. what i will say, if people you know are nervous about america, if there is a nervousness about the political waters, if there is a nervous about the instability, if there is a nervous about the uncertainty, if there is a nervousness about the values that are currently coming from white house, we in london offer that rare thing a stable, open, diverse city. you're more than welcome here. thank you. >> the mayor of london, sadiq khan, saying that london is open for business, also open to students, open to everyone that wants to come here. i think. >> what are the biggest beefs that you raise with him as well, about why london may and i don't want to go back over. i know you mentioned brexit, but i mean that can't be still the key issue is it? >> i think he feels it is though, stephen. i think he feels the big reset recently prime minister keir starmer and
4:51 am
the eu talking together will be a huge help. i think that there isn't anything negative that the mayor feels that london has. everything is positive. in fact, he's saying that june is so busy with all these business conferences, sporting events, music festivals that he really feels london is coming out of the post-pandemic. >> but that would be an indictment on his term because, let's be brutally honest about it, whether whether our viewers likes it or not, he's an incredibly successful politician in the fact that he very few get elected as many times in that role or in any role as he has. >> not only that, steve, he's celebrating 20 years. 20 years ago, he became mp for tooting. he was a human rights lawyer before that. and as you said, it's his historic third term of mayor. i did ask him if he wanted to serve a fourth term. and he said to me, you sound like my mum. and then my wife all at once. i think. >> compared with your wife than
4:52 am
your mum. well that's right. >> when he said mum first i thought, well thank you mayor. but then luckily. >> he has beef with trump and trump have beef with him. and i remember. 2016 this. yes from 2016. exactly. so tell us how that one's evolved. i'm sure you brought it up. >> i did bring. >> it up and i asked him about that. and he said they because they had a big twitter war as well. and now he's saying, of course, that he would welcome president trump when he comes for his second state visit, when he visits king charles. and that it's all calmed down, according to him. >> what would donald trump. >> he said he said he actually did say it was quite. he said it's like having a best friend, you know, with your best friend, you can argue with your best. >> friend like donald trump and sadiq khan would ever be besties. >> i'm not, i'm not. i think he's. >> thinking uk, us. not golf. yes, i think more about the uk us special relationship than about him. and president trump. >> is a unique character. and of course there's elon musk as well. but let me get on to tech because i think that's
4:53 am
fascinating. we have the south by southwest event that's been playing out this week. we've got london tech week next week. so there is a real tech narrative to the uk at least at this point in time. how do you think the uk is doing on that front in terms of attracting fresh talent? we know there's a ton of competition from paris, from berlin, from lisbon, madrid now here as well. stockholm, exactly. yeah. so how is the uk doing on that front. and sadiq khan have a real strategy for bringing more talent in. >> he does karen. absolutely. and actually talking about london tech week which starts on monday. and you have nvidia coming and you have jensen huang who's going to give the opening keynote speech, which is a huge coup for london tech week. and sadiq khan is saying, you know what, all i. we are the center. we're attracting all big tech to london investors. and i put it to him, i said, yes, but you also have been criticized for being overregulated. he said, well, there is that balance between competition and regulation and an ethical framework as well. he's
4:54 am
convinced that london is one of the leading tech hubs in europe. >> interesting. i've got to say, i feel like i'm going to be following jensen huang around all next week in london, in paris as well, if he would tech. so i'm just going to be trailing behind him with a microphone i think. >> but that's what i'm saying. no pressure. you've got macron a few times. >> you know me. >> well. you will. >> i've got. >> every faith. >> it's a blood sport. me and some of those doorstops. thanks, tanya. >> if not, you can get his ai image of him. >> that's right. just drop him in there. a us president, donald trump, has signed a proclamation banning the entry of nationals from 12 countries into the united states, with travel from seven further nations also partially restricted. afghanistan, haiti and yemen are among the 12 on the list, with the president citing national security concerns as the need for the order. yesterday, he called it a disgusting abomination. now, musk has ramped up his attacks on trump's big, beautiful bill. on a separate note, by claiming it will condemn america to debt
4:55 am
slavery, musk is urging lawmakers to kill the bill, slating it on social media in dozens of posts. analysis by the us congressional budget office has estimated that trump's big, beautiful bill would add $2.4 trillion to federal budget deficits over the next decade. it also suggested that 11 million more people could be left without health insurance by 2034, as a result of the bill. the white house shrugged off the analysis as one big gimmick, saying it used an artificial baseline that doesn't factor in 2017 tax cuts. >> nato defense ministers are meeting in brussels today to discuss higher defense spending. it comes amid us president donald trump's push to increase defense spending from the alliance's members to 5% of gdp. well, let's just do this very quickly as well. very few nations up until 4 or 5 years ago even got to the 2% as well. now, a lot of them, most nato members are at the 2% level. the 2% level was agreed in the first decade of this century. it was
4:56 am
agreed, i think, in 2006. so having an agreement to get to 5% is very, very different from actually getting to 5%. and i would just add a couple of things. getting to 2% has proved very difficult for many nations. for instance, italians aren't there, the spanish aren't there, the portuguese aren't there. and dare i say it, 5%. it's a stretch even for the united states, which actually does it at 3.4% at the moment. >> i want to ask you the 3.5% on military, 1.5 on defense and other areas, which is the harder part to try and tick the box on. is it the military side? getting the right people to spend 3.5% on military? is that the harder ask? >> it's all going to go in the same pot. in fact, many years ago there was a i interviewed a certain lady and who happened to be the defense minister of germany at the time. i said, oh, you have to put in all the other stuff we're doing in the world into our defense budget as well. that lady happened to be ursula von der leyen, and she's now, of course, in charge of the commission as well. so the stuff that people put in there, it's quite tortuous working out what is actually military and defense and what is actually other
