yeah, we need to do more. president trump made a promise to the american people. the american people put him on the top issue of immigration and law enforcement. i've not been satisfied with numbers. we all want more numbers. >> john: border czar says more needs to be done to fully implement president trump's immigration crackdown. he is not the only top trump official looking for new ways to light a fire under ice. welcome back as "america reports" rolls into its second hour. this is going to be, sandra, the most jam packed 60 minutes we've seen in recent memory. >> sandra: good to be with you. i'm sandra smith. 3,000 per day. that's how many arrests are reportedly now calling for. griff jenkins has more on this. has anyone at ice reacted to these new proposals? >> reporter: great question,
11:02 am
sandra. no official statement yet. to put this in context, this goal is roughly double what they're currently doing. fox has just learned moments ago some leadership changes within the agency are currently under way, which ice says are intended to realign skill sets as they ramp up efforts with the bosses clearly unsatisfyed. steven miller setting this goal of 3,000 arrests per day. >> we can't take the risk of letting these biden illegals roam around freely so the next american daughter can get raped, the next american kid can get murdered, the next american family can get splintered and torn apart by people who came into this country unchecked, uncontrolled, unvetted, uninvited by the american people. >> reporter: this as ice is already working around the clock ramping up raids in place like nantucket and martha's vineyard in a sting that netted 40 arrests including an ms-13 gang member and child sex offender. one democrat wants to bring back

the abolish ice rhetoric. that emerging in an aoc campaign letter. a white house spokes person blasting it saying aoc democrat party leader calls for abolishing ice. the brave women of ice get dangerous criminals off our streets and protect american citizens. why does aoc want to stop that? mean time, increasing to this 3,000 per day goal will require more money and resources. makes you think of that $147 million board security funds in the big big beautiful bill sitting in the senate. sandra? >> sandra: some lofty goals. griff, thank you. >> we need congress to act. i want to thank the house. they put $12.5 billion into the big beautiful bill that's going to go toward this infrastructure project. that won't be enough. i'm concerned that we could have more of newarks and again why
11:04 am
it's so important that we actually begin this bill with the money congress is going to sends us. >> john: transportation secretary sean duffy with the warning of more newarks if he doesn't get the funding he says he needs to overhaul the air traffic control system. it's plagueed by outages at airports across the country as americans get ready for the busy summer travel season. secretary sean duffy joins us now. mr. secretary, good to have you with us. it's been a minute. we want to talk to you about a road trip you're planning on taking this summer with your family. first let's start with newark airport. the faa has limited the number of flights going in and out of that airport which caused the ceo of united airlines to say things are finally working. listen to what he said. >> we've already seen that leisure traffic has come back. we did take a big hit, but the leisure traffic came back. business is lagging a little. they're the best they're probably ever gonna be. because the faa has done -- we've been asking for a decade.
11:05 am
>> john: things are working better according to united airlines ceo. it's just an interim fix. you've gotta have more of an overhaul and, as you said in that speech, you fear that there are more newarks out there. tell us about it. >> yeah. united has done a great job navigating newark with us. they have the most traffic in and out of the newark airport. normally there's 50 flights taking off in and out of newark. right now we're at 28. when the runway comes online in the middle of june, we're gonna get up to 34 an hour. but we have new telecom that was just laid by verizon. they did a great job. they did it quickly. the ceo is fantastic. we're testing it. that's gonna get flipped on by next month or early july. we have a controller problem. we don't have enough controllers to control the air space.
11:06 am
we have some that are in training now but we're 3,000 short nationwide. until we fix that and fix all the tellecoms in the country, w need to -- [ inaudible ] >> sandra: you are a hero for being able to talk over those sirens. mr. secretary, great to have you on the program. i'll ask you the question i feel like i hear everywhere right now. are we safe to fly? i mean, if you're suggesting there could be more newarks out there, that means there could be more outages and there could be flights at risk in the sky. how do you answer that question? >> we have a number of what i'll call blips. about 100, 200 a week in the telecom system. we have redundancies in place so the system is safe. we have systems in place for controllers and pilots. so i feel like we're safe.
11:07 am
if we don't fix this now, what's going to come if you have multiple newarks at the same time? you lose your telecom. >> sandra: what does happen? what does happen? >> well, what happens is we shut down air space or reduce traffic because the number one thing, we let people travel safely. i want you to travel on time. i don't want you delayed. but the most important thing is you get to where you want to go. that's why you see in newark we're at only 28 flights an hour so it's slowed down. this is a huge part of our economy. we move products and people and goods through air space. this is, by far, the most important infrastructure project in all the country to repweuldz this air traffic control system in america. >> john: as you point out, mr. secretary, there's two problems here. the aging equipment that needs to be overhauled. then there's the chronic shortage of air traffic controller. we hadz an air traffic controller on. he points the finger of blame on
11:08 am
the obama administration. listen to what he said. >> the staffing issue pertains to 2013 when idiologs within the obama administration eliminated over 3,000 well trained collegiate trained initiative students who were ready to enter the work force. >> john: the obama administration did eliminate the merit based system for hiring air traffic controllers to go with a different system to try to bring more diversity, equity and inclusion into the system. as michael pierson said, 3,000 qualified candidates were booted from the program and had to start all over again. has that problem lingered since then? >> so, john, there's a number of problems that have brought us to this point. the pending lawsuit in regard to those controllers with the faa so i don't want to comment on that. also covid made us short as well. i've increased the pipeline of students coming into the academy.
11:09 am
the best and brightest, the highest scores get in first. then i'm asking current air traffic controllers who have been on the job for 25 years to stay on the job. we'll pay them a 20% bonus for them to stay every year beyond their eligible date of retirement. if i increase the pipeline of new people coming in, i can keep those controllers from retiring that's going to make up the difference as we get more controllers into the system. this has been a problem for the long time. the biden administration didn't do anything to fix it, right? all of these problems were well known. they did nothing to make it better. we're going to fix it. we're going to work with congress to make sure we don't pass this problem off to the next administration. you know the air space well. not only do we have airplanes. we're going to add drones into the air space. we're going to add ubers in the air into the air space. it's going to become far more complicated. we need a state of the art
11:10 am
system to be able to handle that increased traffic when it comes online. we can't do that now, but if we do this bill, it's going to be ready for all the new uses of the air space in the coming years. >> sandra: we know you are heading up those efforts and you'll keep us posted on all the development to improve the situation for our american air ways and sky. let me ask you about why you are there today. there's a push by this white house to hit the road. take your family on a road trip. i think it's the great american road trip expo you're at today. this as gas prices are dropping. they're down from a year ago. they're about $3.57 a year ago. we're $3.17 now today. so, mr. secretary, what's the push there? i can anecdotally say i know one family that chose to drive from texas to indiana. not because they're afraid of flying, but simply this was a price issue. >> so, listen.

to cross the finish line. the question is, i guess, mr. speaker, what's the car gonna look like when it crosses the finish line? will it still have all four wheels and a body? senator ron johnson told us this last week about the bill. he's not happy at all. >> we need presidential leadership to be on board returning to a reasonable prepandemic total spending. no more than $6.5 billion. right now we're on track to be over $7 trillion. that's completely unacceptable. >> john: he's not the on one unhappy about the level of spending versus savings. it looks like the senate is going to do some reworking with this bill. what do you think it looks like when it comes out the other side? >> well, look. i've encouraged them to do as little reworking as possible because we have a very delicate balance that we maintain in the house and senate. we both have small majorities. i don't disagree with ron johnson. he's right, we have a big national debt problem. but i think what's being discounted here is the fact that we are achieving the largest amount of savings in the history
11:45 am
of government on planet earth. i mean, we're going to save over $1.5 trillion in spending. that's a big, big thing. we didn't get in this economic situation overnight, and it's gonna take us awhile to get out of it. but this would be the biggest, largest, dramatic turn that we've ever had in congress. and so it's a big achievement. now, look, this is just the beginning. this is not the end. this is the first of what we believe will be multiple reconciliation package, and we'll be codifying more doge cuts and putting all these things into law. so this is an important step. i don't want them to miss that as they're debating the merits of the bill. >> sandra: speaking of doge, elon musk taking issue on whether this can be both big and beautiful. listen. >> you know, i was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly. which increases the budget deficit, doesn't decrease it and under mines the work the doge team is doing. it both can be big or beautiful.
Check
11:46 am
i don't know if it can be both. >> sandra: how you respond to his concerns about it? >> yes. i sent my good friend elon a long text messages explaining it can be big and beautiful. what i want to make sure he understands, the projection he's referring to and others is from the cbo, the congressional budget office. they are historically, totally unreliable. it's run by democrats, 84% of the number crunchers are donors to big democrats. they don't have our best interest in mind. they've always been off. by way of example, they were off on their projections of the tax cuts and jobs act in the first trump administration by $1 trillion. the problem is they do not use dynamic scoring. what that means in layman's terms, they don't give us credit for the extraordinary economic growth that will be spurred along by this bill. this is a pro growth package. lower tax rates, less regulation. we'll do exactly what we did in
11:47 am
the first trump administration, but this time on steroids. you're gonna have more jobs created, higher wages, more labor participation. all those things need to be factored in, because that's reality. by the way, cbo is giving no calculation at all to the new revenues that are being produced by the trump tariff policies. all these other things that are happening. so we believe we're gonna get the economy going and this is going to be deficit reducing at the end of the day. it matters how you do the math. that's what's important for everybody to remember. >> john: you mentioned this just a moment ago, and that is codifying the doge cuts into law. the white house is going to be sending the frame work of a resignificants package that includes cuts of $1.1 billion from pbs and foreign aid. marjorie taylor green said personally i want to pass doge cuts every week until the bloated out of control government is reined back in. we cannot survive our national debt and honestly we maybe past
11:48 am
thwaste, fraud, abuse and unnecessarore than $9 billion in cuts the president wants codified into law. ca it? >> yes. marjorie's exactly right. she and i were talking about this yesterday. you'll find a big appetite across the court. we want government to be leaner and more efficient and effective. the beauty of what doge has been able to do, the reason it's so revolutionary is because elon cracked the code. he had access. all the stars aligned. we had a president bold enough to do it and we had someone with elon's capability to do it and have his algorithms running through the data to fine these irregularities. these are things that have been hidden from congress. we've been trying to do our oversight responsibility but bureaucracy was hiding this. this changes the way government works. the doge effort will go on long
11:49 am
before his tenure as a temporary assistant in all this because it's changing the way people look at this. the oversight's a really important component, and that's gonna be a permanent part of the government now. it's an exciting thing. >> sandra: i want to finish up with some breaking news. our audience saw this. harvard had its commencement ceremony today, just a short time ago. i'm gonna throw to a clip out of cambridge. this is the commencement speaker. i ask you this in the context of your house-led efforts to crack down on anti-semitism on our college campuses. this was the commencement speaker moments ago slamming what this person calls a cascade of draconian government measures leading to fear in the u.s. and across the globe. listen here. >> some of actual students worry about being wrongly detained and even deported. a cascade of draconian government measures has already led to so much uncertainty, so
11:50 am
much pain and suffering in this country. >> sandra: wonder if you would like to respond to that? >> well, i would say that harvard would not be receiving scrutiny it is right now if they were not involved in a cascade of anti-semitism. they are allowing this to flourish on their campus and many of the other things that have been happening there, an abuse of taxpayer dollars. that's why the white house and congress are determined to use our resources responsibly. we have the power of the purse, and we will use it. these institutions need to be places where free debate flourishes and free market place of ideas are encouraged. >> john: mr. speaker, good to see you again. thanks for taking time today. we'll see if you can get the big beautiful bill through by the end of july. >> sandra: thank you, mr. speaker. >> thank you. >> john: appreciate it. we'll see you again soon.
